Welcome to nataliejstevens.com
It is my goal as an artist to create art that is aesthetically pleasing to the viewer as well as to sometimes challenge what the viewer is looking at and cause one to question the space he or she is entering. I work with abstract and realistic compositions. I often work with spaces both abstractly and realistically, and I work with portraits and compositions personal to the individuals they are created for. I work primarily with acrylic paint on canvas as well as graphite pencil in my drawings. My first body of work, Spaces and Places, examines interior and exterior spaces. It is my goal in this series to reinvent the spaces and cause the viewer to reconsider the subject. I aim to focus on light, shadows, angles, details and patterns to approach the space from a new angle. I select subjects that can work on both a formal level as well as a psychological level. My paintings are establishing shots. The viewer is invited inside the space to draw his or her own conclusions. In my second body of work, Exploring Abstraction, the focus is completely on the act of painting. I explore space in a more liberating way by playing with abstract compositions which forces me to become much more aware of the painting process. I explore colour, texture and space. While some images are tied loosely to an original image, many are purely abstract explorations. My third body or work, Portraiture and Realism, explores the opposite of my abstract designs by examining a high degree of realism through portraiture. Both in acrylic paint and graphite pencil, I create portraits of a high degree of realism. My final series is my Personal Reflections series. This is a recent series in which I create compositions for specific individuals working with a theme of their choice. I combine abstraction, imagery and text to create unique and personal compositions. I enjoy exploring different directions in my work, and this collection of images illustrates the diversity of my practice.
